The best sights of Barcelona

Barcelona is a fascinating city and there are many things to see. Here is a list of some of Barcelona's most popular sights.

Uffizi Gallery

The Uffizi Gallery is one of the most important museums of the world and derives its name from the fact that originally these spaces were used as "offices".

In fact at the end of 1500, the Medici family commissioned Giorgio Vasari to build a strategic place next to their Palazzo Vecchio and close by the river Arno for meetings and bureaucratic affairs.
Over the years, parts of the building turned into a place of exhibition of works of art that many of the Medici were collecting along the years. It was really labored for Vasari to imagine that he designed the building would one day host a lot of the artists whose lives he had written about.
Thus was born one of the most important museums of the world, and the most visited in Italy, with over 1.700.000 visitors a year and 200.000 works of art on display.

The Uffizi gallery houses some of the greatest masterpieces of world art, with particular reference to the Renaissance period: here you can admire the Birth of Venus and Primavera by Botticelli, the Doni Tondo by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci's Annunciation. But the enormous collection offers XIII century works by Master Cimabue, pass through the Tuscan Macchiaioli and includes foreign masters such as Delacroix, Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya.

The Uffizi Gallery is located between Piazza della Signoria and the river Arno. Must-see for any art lover, it requires, for the more experienced, more than one visit, because of the enormous concentration of works of art.
The Vasari corridor connects the main building at the Palazzo Pitti on the other side of the Arno, passing over the Ponte Vecchio.
It was a secret passage, built for safety reasons and converted nowadays into one of the most famous collections of portraits existing.
