Chueca

Chueca

Located in the city centre, since the 1980s this area has converted into one of the most modern and interesting places in Madrid. This area is limited by Paseo de Recoletos, Gran Via, Calle de Fuencarral and Fernando VI, with its centre Plaza de Chueca, from which it receives its name.

A gay area, it is one of the most cosmopolitan, fun and multi-faced areas of the city. It is characterised by its 19th century buildings and its pedestrianised streets, ideal for a stroll, in which you can find boutiques, design shops, chic restaurants, 1940 stores, classic tabernas, Chinese food stores, amongst others.

When the weather is fine the café/bar terraces fill with people, like 'Bodega Angel Sierra'. Take advantage and stop to have a beer 'una caña' or a vermuth, a drink well appreciated by Madrileños.

In Chueca you can find anything and everything, with a wide range of entertainment. Local favourites like 'Ras' are frequented by famous people from the 80s like photographer Pablo Pérez-Mnguez, the cinema director Pedro Almodóvar, and Fabio McNamara or the singer Alaska. Actors like Javier Bardem have left their foot prints on bars in this area.

During the month of July Gay Pride is celebrated, a well known event, not only for the gay world, in which giant carousels parade down the streets with lots of dancing and people in bright fancy dress.

Located in the north east of The Madrid of Austria, you'll find the National Library of Madrid. In the same Paseo de la Castellana you can quickly get to Prado Museum, Tyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Palacio de Comunicaciones.
