Barcelona Information

Born Area

The Born is undoubtedly one of the most fashionable areas of Barcelona. This quarter, bordered by the Barri Gotic to the south, Ciutadella park to the north and the marina to the east, has been modernised and gentrified at a vertiginous rhythm over the last few years. The results have been more than positive; the original stone buildings, now restored, house a wide variety of trendy clothes stores, fashionable bars, sophisticated restaurants and interesting food shops. Perhaps more than any other area, the Born exemplifies the cosmopolitan and fashionable image that Barcelona projects to the world.

The authorities have been at pains to conserve the original look and feel of the neighbourhood and there are many architectural and historical attractions. Perhaps the most emblematic is the church of Santa Maria del Mar, a great example of gothic architecture which dwarfs the pretty mansion blocks that encircle it. Its voluminous interior, with its dazzling stained glass windows, is definitely worth a visit.

Santa Maria del Mar is a good place to orientate yourself when visiting the Born. Leading away from the church towards Jaume 1 metro station and the Barri Gotic is Calle Argentaria. Named after the silversmiths who formerly occupied the street, it is now home to decent tapas bars and trendy fashion shops. Moving away from Santa Maria del Mar in the opposite direction is Passeig del Borne. A wide pedestrian street, there are a couple of good outdoor cafes at one end which are perfect for people watching, and for keen shoppers, the most fashionable clothes shops are all on or just off the Paseig.

In a restored medieval palace on Montcada street.you’ll find the Picasso Museum with a huge collection of the artist’s work, particularly from his early years.
